Meet Juan José:

Juan José is a professional with over 20 years of experience dedicated almost exclusively to the field of intellectual property, having ventured into it since his student days.

After 15 years of collaboration in one of the main firms in Ecuador specialized in intellectual property, he participated in the competition for the formation of the Court of Appeals and the highest administrative instance of the competent national authority of intellectual rights of Ecuador. He reached a position as a main member, over recognized professionals in the area. He served in this space for about seven years, being one of the longest-serving members in the history of the organization.

Thanks to his exceptional handling of the subject matter, in all areas of intellectual property, he has been appointed on multiple occasions as principal advisor to the negotiating teams of trade agreements, representing Ecuador with the Republic of South Korea, the member countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and Mexico. He was also a constant member of the monitoring team of the Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, in the field of intellectual property, and in the tables organized within the framework of the Trade and Investment Agreement signed with the United States, where he represented the country before the highest delegates in trade matters of that country, being recognized for his exemplary management of this area.

Since 2023 he has been providing his services as a Senior Associate Attorney at AVL Abogados, where his unique perspective from both public and private sectors has allowed him to provide appropriate, innovative, and effective solutions to clients’ needs, specializing in litigation and the defense of rights.

Additionally, he has experience in related areas such as advertising law, personal data protection and contractual matters associated with these practices.

• Extensive experience in the public and private spheres, which allows him to provide advice from a dual perspective, from the point of view of the legal system, as well as from the internal practice of the national trademark authority.

• Experience in handling cases in all areas of intellectual property, which enables him to provide innovative and tailor-made solutions to rights protection needs.

• His practice has focused mainly on litigation and defense of rights, at the administrative and judicial levels, where he has developed key tools for the strict protection of the interests of clients. Without overlooking the possibility of proposing and reaching amicable agreements, always ensuring the client’s benefit in the short, medium, and long term.

• Juan José has participated in countless forums, conferences, workshops and has sat at the negotiating table of instruments, at the highest levels, which has allowed him to develop a clear and concrete discourse, to communicate ideas and proposals in simple terms.
